AMRITSAR: In an attempt to give a major fillip to hockey in the state, the Guru Nanak Dev University has decided to give away the old Astroturf to different educational institutes by dividing it into four parts.

With GNDU all geared up for the installation of a brand new one, the university authorities have planned to put the old Astroturf to good use. The old one is being divided into four parts and being given away to educational institutions that show promise in the sport.

Talking to HT, Director Sports of GNDU, Dr Kanwaljit Singh said, "The University authorities, in consultation with Director Sports, Punjab,

Dr Pargat Singh decided to divide the old Astroturf and give it to those educational institutes where hockey is in good shape."

Detailing about the recipients of the same, Dr Singh said that Guru Arjan Dev Senior Secondary School Tam Taran, would be the recipient of the first part of the Astroturf, since the school has a hockey-training academy for girls. Baba Gurmukh Singh Uttam Singh School, Khadoor Sahib, which runs a similar training academy for boys, would be the second recipient.

"The remaining two parts will go to Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, and Regional Centre of GNDU at Gurdaspur;' Dr Kanwaljit said. The Director Sports further added that the task of distributing the parts would be initiated in the coming few days.

Notably, a new Astroturf is in the process of coming up at GNDU. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, M.S. Gill had laid the foundation stone for the new Astroturf in the month of June in an effort to give a major fillip to the sport of hockey.

However, the project of laying a new one is hitting delay. "As far as the new Astroturf is concerned, the work of construction of its base is going on," Dr Kanwajit informed.
