AMRITSAR: Five children from Amritsar region brought accolades to Punjab after they won several medals in different age categories at the Indo-Nepal Table Soccer Tournament organized in December 2009.
Team coach Rajesh Kumar Thapa said that three of the participants - Yanish Kumar, Abhishek Trehan and Shahbaz Singh - are from Amritsar.
"The other two participants - Arvinder Singh and Gurkaran Singh - are from Tarn Taran," Thapa said, adding that the tournament took place from December 28 to January 2.
In the under 12 years category, Yanish Kumar won bronze in singles while
Yanish and Abhishek won silver in doubles. Similarly, in the under 14 years category, Arvinder won bronze in singles.
In the under 16 year’s category, Gurkaran Singh and Shahbaaz Singh won gold in doubles. Of these, Gurkaran Singh has been participating in the tournament for a couple of years now and had also rep resented the country at Asia Cup in Malaysia in 2009.
Thapa said that the city students have started showing lots of interest in table soccer.
"We had started with six students coming from one school in 2096. Now, around 300 students from 10 schools are affiliated to us," Thapa said. Moreover, Dashmesh International School is bringing in the best infrastructure for playing table soccer, Thapa said.
