MC REPLACES CONG’S WITH SAD HOARDINGS

A DAY after Punjab Congress campaign committee chief Capt Amarinder Singh’s road show here, the municipal Corporation today served notices on tent- house owners who had erected welcomes gates for Congress leaders in the city.

The MC also removed all posters and hoardings with pictures of Amarinder with in three hours of his visit. There were replaced by posters, banners and hoardings with pictures of SAD president Suhkbir Singh Badal, his wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal and cabinet minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia, Who were in the city to launch the Naanhi Chaan project from Harmandar Sahib?

The MC has issued notices to four tent-house owners for digging up the road to erect welcome gates. MC Commissioner D.P.S.Kharbanda said notices had been served to fine the owners for damaging the road. However, officers and other employees of the MC did not divulge details of the notices to the media.

“We didn’t want to come into the picture for working against the Congress. Thus, we decided to serve notices on tent-house owners rather than political leaders,” said an MC officer on the condition of anonymity.

He said it was a standing order from the bureaucracy to remove all posters, banners and hoardings of Capt Amarinder Singh overnight and replace these with those featuring SAD leaders.

Congress leaders Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Jasbir Dimpa said the action showed how much the sad leadership was afraid of Amarinder. “They can remove his posters but they can’t keep the public away from the Congress. This reflects the political Bankruptcy of the SAD,” they said.

Dimpa said if the officers were working as per rules, they must also issue notices to the SAD for erecting welcome gates in the city. Otherwise, they would face the music when the congress returned to power, he warned.

The MC Commissioner said the corporation had decided this time to punish only those who had dug up roads to erect gates. “No notices has been issued to any political party for putting up hoardings and posters, be it the Congress or the SAD. However, next time we will fine all violators irrespective of their political alignment,” he said.

Daily live video Kirtan program from Harmandir Sahib on the internet demanded

Amritsar,August 27:Amritsar Vikas Manch has demanded a site for the video broadcast of daily live video Kirtan program from Harmandir Sahib on the internet and also an extension of its audio broadcast on the internet radio from the beginning to the end .

In a special communique to the SGPC President Mr. Avtar Singh Makkar, the Manch patron Dr. Charanjit Singh Gumtala has apprised him of the technological developments in USA, Canada, UK and many other countries (included India) where by all Gurdwaras have set up their own websites and started dishing out video programs just like TV and one of the most visited sites www.sikhnet.com provides links to different Gurdwara websites so as facilitate the users. Even the service from Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib Ludhiana telecast from 4:30 am to 11 am (IST) and 4:30 pm to 10:30 pm (IST) is linked to benefit viewers sitting anywhere.
Programs from the Harmandir Sahib Amritsar are viewed with respect and enjoyed worldwide by not only the Sikh population but also many others. These programs are telecast daily by ETC Punjabi channel in India and by Alpha/ETC Punjabi channel all over the world. Unfortunately these channels are not available on the internet and a special and costly connection is required from satellite and cable companies. In USA, Dish Network (Satellite Company) charges $150 for installing a new dish and $20 per month for showing this channel alone thus robbing huge sums of money from Gurbani Lovers. And, Alpha/ETC Punjabi is not available in many countries, so it is not possible to watch Gurbani Kirtan from Harmandir Sahib even if they want to spend any amount. In fact, even in USA, Canada, where Alpha/ETC Punjabi channel is available through Dishnetwork, viewers living in apartments cannot watch this channel because it requires putting up a dish which is not permitted in apartment housing. One of the biggest cable company Time Warner show Indian channels but skips Alpha/ETC Punjabi.

Besides, the moment Gurbani Kirtan program stops, the screen of Alpha/ETC Punjabi is taken over by ads from taantriks and venders of superstitions and dogma.

With the availability of direct video programs from the Harmandir Sahib on the SGPC site, viewers, whether in Europe or America or Far East or middle East or even Australia and New Zealand would be able to access them. So world over, thousand of University students can also view and listen to Gurbani on the internet. This would also neutralize the charge of marketing Gurbani which the SGPC has to face not unoften.

Similarly, the radio hours of Gurbani Kirtan should be extended to cover the entire service i.e.from the beginning to the end, daily.

SGPC JOINS INITIATIVE TO SAVE GIRL CHILD

IT IS a novel idea aimed at serving the dual purpose of saving the girl child as well as the environment. Under the “Nanhi Chann” (little shade) scheme, being launched by SGPC in association with the Punjab government and a private company, people visiting Harmandar Sahib will be given free saplings which are to be named after the girl child, along with water from the holy ’sarovar’ from August 27 onwards.

“These are a strong parallel in the bonds between a mother and child on the other. So these two ideas are brought together through the ‘Nanhi chaan’ Scheme,” said DC kahan Singh Pannu. He said the saplings (’buta prasad’) could either be planted by newly wed women or mothers with daughters.

The initiative is the brainchild of Harpal Singh, chairman of Ranbaxy Laboratories and Impact Projects. “Aparts from saplings of ‘neem’ and ‘ber’, which find mention in Gurbani, saplings of other species suitable to the environment will be diatributed,” said Harpal.

The district administration is planning to distribute more than 2 lakh saplings, which are being provided by the Forest Department, till September 30.About 50,000 saplings have reached Harmandar Sahib. SAD president Sukhbir Badal’s wife Harsimrat Kaur will launch the scheme from the ‘galliara’ of Harmandar Sahib.

MEDICAL STUDENT WAS MURDERED: POLICE

IT HAS taken two years for the Amritsar Police to come to the conclusion that medical student Shashi Bhushan, whose body was found on the government Medical College premises here, was murdered.

Amritsar SSp Kunwar Vijay PartapSingh that after the police inquiry had established that Shashi was murdered, a case under Section 302 of the IPC was registered against unidentified persons. Shahsi’s body was found in sewerage behind the Pathology Department of the college on November 28, 2006. Calling it an accident, the police had initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC on the basis of the post-mortem examination conducted at the medical college.

Sensing foul play, Sarabjit Singh Verka, Chief investigator of the Punjab Human Rights Organization (PHRO), had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July. Quoting Shahsi’s parents, Verka alleged that another medical student, Arun Dalal, and his father Dr J.s. Dalal, a former medical college principal and now DRME, Punjab, were involved in the murder.

The PHRO had claimed in its petition that Shahsi was influenced by Arun and his father to help Arun in cheating in MBBS exam in November 2006.

“However, Shashi was caught by the flying squad, but managed to escape. He took shelter in Dr Dalal’s house and went missing after that,” the PHRO claimed. Shahsi’s body was found six days later. Interestingly according to the post-mortem examination conducted in the college, the death was an accident, but the second post-mortem done in New Delhi at the instance of Shahsi’s parents confirmed injuries on his head, neck and skull. Shahsi’s parents had alleged that their son was murdered and had even demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

Verka, however, said registering a case was not enough. “Even after two years, the police have failed to identify the accused,” he said.
