Amritsar, March 22
IT’S BEEN termed a ‘sensitive seat’ by the Election Commission, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit Amritsar on March 23, but three of the four posts of Superintendent of Police have been lying vacant for the past one month.
Amritsar normally has four SPs, but after the recent general transfers and a few made by the Election Commission, three SPs were shifted and the posts were not filled. The city has only one SP – SP City-I Babu Lal Meena at this point of time.
SP City (II) Sukhminder Singh Mann was promoted as SSP of Khanna, SP (D) Gurmeet Singh Chohan as SSP of Amritsar (Rural) after the Election Commission removed SSP (Rural) R.S. Khatra and SP (Headquarter) S.P.S. Sidhu was transferred to Jalandhar.
Though Rupinder Singh was transferred to Amritsar as SP City (II), he did not join and was transferred elsewhere. Now, with elections round the corner and the PM’s visit, the district police are stretched being short of SP-rank officers.
DIG, Border Range,
Gurpreet Kaur Deo said, “Yes, the posts are lying vacant. We have written to the state government to get them filled.”
