AMRITSAR: Alleging “rampant lawlessness” in Punjab, the Amritsar based Majha Ex-Servicemen Human Rights Front on Tuesday said the Police Department had its hands tied with local politicians holding sway.
Col G.S. Sandhu (retd), chairman of the front, said non-IPS officers were helpless as they were prone to political pressure. “Punjab police, in general, are shirking from their responsibilities. A typical example of political interference was the transfer of an upright and efficient officer like Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, who was shunted out as Amritsar SSP after a three-day dharna by a local MLA,” he said.
He appealed to the chief minister and the DGP to re-instate Singh, or else the development would be demoralized. To substantiate his lawlessness charge, Sandhu said the Amritsar Rural police had not yettaken any action against suspects in the assault case in which agriculture officers had been attacked when they had raided a pesticide dealer in Ajnala around a month ago.
“A case was registered, but there has been no further action. Besides that, Ajnala SHO Naurang Singh himself is facing investigation. Such officers, with criminal cases, should not be posted as SHOs; Sandhu said.
Highlighting another ease, Sundhu said Surinder Kaw’, a widow or Ajnala, had been made to run from pillar to post to get back her seven acres of land. “She shares land with• her sister in-law Beant Kaur, who is being supported by the local MLA constituency. While Beant has been given her share of seven acres, yet Surinder is being harassed;’ Sandhu alleged.
Condemning the Ajnala police in yet another case, Sandhu said one Major Singh Waan had been booked on the charge of attempt to murder in 2009 on a complaint filed by his mother-in-law.
