Amritsar, July 19
A mentally ill woman forcibly threw her two minor sons into the Tarsikka canal before jumping into the water on Saturday. All three Sharandeep Kaur (32) and her sons Simarpreet (5) and Jagdev (3) – were feared dead.
A shopkeeper, Lakha Singh, who was witness to the incident, told the police that Sharandeep Kaur was carrying a bag and sat on the bridge with her sons. “Suddenly, she threw them into the canal and followed. Onlookers tried to stop her by shouting, but she didn’t listen,” he added,
The police roped in divers to trace the bodies and asked the Irrigation Department to minimize the flow of water in the canal.
The Martewal SHO said the village sarpanch and others, including the deceased’s husband Amardeep Singh, confirmed that Sharandeep was mentally-ill and had been under going treatment for depression since long.
SSP (Rural) Gurmeet Singh Chouhan said the reason behind the suicide remained unclear though it seemed she took the step under depression. He ruled out any foul playas her husband was away when Sharandeep committed suicide. A case would be registered after the bodies are recovered, he added.
