What used to be a source of convenience for people, mobile phones; computers and other electronic gadgets are the new substance of abuse. More and more youth are getting hooked to gadgets, which is leading to behavioral problems among them, feel experts.
As per Dr J.P.S. Bhatia, the owner of a leading de-addiction centre in the region, “Addiction to gadgets is generally seen among students in 16-20 year age group. At my centre, I usually come across two-three such cases every week.”
“Initially, most students approach me with behavioral problems like quarrels in school/college or lack of appetite. It is only after interacting with them and counselling that we find out their addiction to gadgets as the cause,” says Dr Bhatia.
This phase of their life is very crucial as it is the age when most students get a feel of independence. The tendency to undertake forbidden acts makes them more vulnerable to this type of addiction, he added.
In such a scenario, the support and care of parents plays a very important role to help youth move away from addiction.
“In today’s times, parents and kids don’t spend quality time together, which leads adolescents to find solace in gadgets. Parents should spend quality time with children and be sensitive towards their feelings. This would motivate children to shun their addiction,” added Dr Bhatia.
