Amritsar, June 2
CONCERNED OVER the rise in “indecent” depiction of women in the print and electronic media, Punjab Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla has urged the President and Information Broadcasting Minister to keep a check over the practice.
In letter to President Pratiba Patil and I&B Minister Ambika Soni, Chawla criticised the advertisements of some liquor companies for obscene depiction of women in media advertisements.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, prohibits publication, exhibition, advertisement, pamphlet, book, film, photograph or representation, which contains an indecent representation of women in any form.
She said as both President and I&B Minister are also women, She hopes that they would consider her letter and would formulate a policy to stop such practice. She also demanded a change in the existing legislation and strict punishment for violators.
