Amritsar, July 14
Claiming that nearly 10,000 cars/jeeps are plying in Punjab with VIP one/two digit registration numbers illegally issued by district trans port offices, the Punjab Human Rights Organization (PHRO) has sought the cancellation of all these registrations and the registration of criminal cases against users as well as issuing authorities.
Serving an ultimatum on the Punjab government in this regard, PHRO spokesman Sarbjit Singh Verka has sought action within a month, failing which they would file a PIL in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Verka said the dubious practice of illegally issuing VIP numbers and then destroying the records was a small part of a big racket at various offices of the district transport officer.
He claimed that the PHRO had gathered visual and documentary evidence of use of illegal registration numbers on cars by some senior government functionaries, their families and core group of people attached to politicians.
“We will expose these so called VIPs,” he said.
The PHRO also questioned why the government was defending a PCS officer, whose name figured in an inquiry report about illegally issuing VIP registration numbers.
