STUDENTS WHO enjoy browsing through numerical data, have a liking for sitting jobs and like working with numbers are ideally suited for commerce. With the service sector growing at a fast pace and making a major contribution to the GDP of the country, professionals in the field are certainly here to stay.
In the past few years, there has been a growth in the number of students pursuing commerce, as has the number of courses being offered in the stream by different institutes gone up.
“Over the years, there’s has been seen an upward trend has seen a shift and more and more students are pursuing commerce. In our college, every year, the number of students applying for different courses in commerce exceeds the number of seats, especially in courses as BBA and B.Com (Professional),” says Meenu Kohli, Head of Department at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar.
The obvious choice among students is B.Com and, thereafter, work as accountants. The other relevant options that one can go in for are cost accounting, work accounting, business economics, financial accounting, auditing, business finance, business law, business communication and company secretary.
Dr A.C. Vaid, principal of GGDSD College, feels that commerce is such a field, which is helpful in everyday life. “Be it any industry, business or household, management and economics are needed everywhere. Hence, commerce helps us in every field of life. When If talking of SD college, it sees 100 per cent placement. Our students have been able to excel in jobs as well as in industry.”
”Any field related to business and industry will always offer scope for students pursuing commerce. In the past few years, the scope of commerce has increased a lot, mainly due to the major growth that is being experienced by the financial sector,” says Dr
J.S. Pasricha, professor in the department of commerce at Punjabi University, Patiala.
In keeping with the boom that the sector is witnessing, may educational institutions have even started offering various postgraduate diplomas related to commerce. To equip their students in the field, Khalsa College, Amritsar, has come with advanced diplomas in banking law and practice and insurance and risk management.
Principal Dr Daljeet Singh says, “These diplomas will help students in getting job in any multi national corporation as well as in banking and insurance sectors.”
Commerce is also a favourite because it’s lucrative. MD and CEO of Step Up Placements, Abhishek Upadhyay, feels that sectors like banking; finance and insurance are proving to be the best sectors for commerce students. “Also, these days, there is a growing demand for professionals in auditing, underwriting as well as financial product development,” he adds.
