THE TARN Taran police have suspended Khalra who Kamaljit Singh and ASI Kuljit Singh on the charge of the torturing granthi Balwinder Singh.
On the tip-off that Balwinder allegedly had links with smugglers, a team from Khalra police station picked him up from his house early yesterday morning. The granthi was allegedly Kept in illegal detention and tortured by policemen.
He was released late last night after the intervention of local residents and SGPC members of the area.
Balwinder, who is undergoing treatment at the Sur Singh hospital, works at Beer Baba Budha Sahib Gurdwara and is an employee of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
“I was badly beaten up by the police and also insulted. My hairs were pulled by policemen. I have not done anything wrong,” Balwinder said.
Although no case was registered against Balwinder, he landed in hospital after sustaining injuries due to alleged police torture. He bore injury marks on the legs.
Balwinder’s family and SGPC members accused the police of targeting him and demanded a high level probe into the matter.
Sources said the incident had been brought to the notice of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and other officials.
SP (Headquarters) Rashpal Singh Ghuman said, “After conducting a probe into the matter, we have suspended SHO Kamaljit Singh and sent them to the Police Lines. The way the Khalra police conducted the interrogation was unacceptable.”
Meanwhile, police sources said Balwinder’s medical examination would be conducted and further action could be taken against the accused policemen.
