8 Killed as rain lashes Punjab

EIGHT PRESONS were Killed in Amritsar district as heavy rain lashed Punjab on wednesday. Four persons were killed and six injured when building were damaged due to the rain in Amritsar Raj Kumar (35) and Vikas(6) died as their houses collapsed in Bharat Nagar and Islamabad areas, respectively. Sumeet Shelly, a BDS student, was electrocuted after water inundated her house in East Mohan Nagar.
The rain , believed to be the heaviest this season, lasted five hours and inundated low-lying areas of the city. A street in Amritsar’s Gagan Colony sunk 20feet and caused cracks in adjoining houses.Residents blamed “excessive digging” for that contruction of the basement in a mall for the damage.
MC Commissioner D.P.S kharbanda said a probe had already been marked against Celebration Mall. The administrative officers, district court complex and MC building were waterlogged. DC K.S. Pannu said ,”We are treating this as flood.compensation will be awarded to the kin of the deceased.”
