Tea trade is one of the traders of Amritsar established about 200 years ago. This trade along with the textile trade, flourished during the regime of Maharaja Ranjit Singh who inspired the people to settled here.
At the moment, Amritsar Tea Traders Association is looking after the interest of the tea traders. Shri Rajinder Kumar Goel is the president of the association.
According to shri Goel there are approx 50 to 60 factories in Amritsar where sorting and grading of the Tea is done according to size of the granules.
Tea trade business in Amritsar is centered around Katra Ahluwali. Green tea manufactured here is not available anywhere else in the country green tea of Amritsar meets the demand of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pardesh. Amritsar is also famous for its high quality black tea. Previously tea from Amritsar was also exported to Pakistan and Afganistan.
The tea merchant of Amritsar purchase tea from all famous tea producing centers viz. Assam, Tripura, Calcutta, Dehradun, Kangra, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Gauhati, Cochin, Coonoor, Coimbatore etc.
